A selection of walks in and around Fairlie.
Jack Lovelock Memorial Track (1 1/2 hours, 8km)
From the Memorial walk up School Road. After leaving the township, pass Gillingham Street on your left and walk on until you turn right onto the Lovelock Track Road. Follow the road until you reach Nixons Road, turning right. Continue until you reach SH8 then turn right into Fairlie and return to the township.
The Fairlie River Walk (35 - 40 minutes one way)
The Fairlie River Walk begins just below the Allandale Bridge over the Opihi River close to the Gateway Holiday Park. The walkway follows the river through evidence of the 1994 floods to end at a track leading to Talbot Rock. From the end of the track you can either return via the same path or up Talbot Street. Another is to follow a rugged marked track to the left from where the walkway emerges out of the trees. This is called the Opihi River Track and comes out at Opihi Gorge Road.
The Opihi Gorge Walk (1km)
Park the car in the car park at the end of Opihi Gorge Road and retrace your steps to cross the creek which marks the start of the Opihi Gorge walk. The destruction of the footbridge by floods has limited the track to 1km and at times is a little steep but well worth the walk to sit and watch the water go by. Return along the same path.
