The Te Araroa (meaning The Long Path) walkway is a national chain of walking tracks that runs the length of New Zealand. Te Araroa's route in the South Island is just a suggested joining of tracks at present, open for testing and revision. Visit the Te Araroa website for more maps, more information, and stories from people who have walked the entire length of the country.
There are two sections of the walkway that include the Mackenzie district. The walk is challenging at times and walkers will need to be fit and experienced in long hikes. Of course, you can just do small sections of the walk if you prefer!
