Twizel area walks

Walks in and around Twizel:

Twizel Walkway (3 hours, 9km)

Access is from the Highway 8 entrances to Twizel.  This easy walk encircles the town amongst the pine trees and grassland.  The track is marked with posts and a map is available at the local information centre.

Benmore Peninsula (2 hours, 6km)

Access to the loop track from Otematata is via the road end above the Benmore Hydroelectric Dam 60km from Twizel.  This easy walk, through an exotic forest and around a peninsula that juts into Lake Benmore, is interspersed with lake and mountain views.

Ben Ohau Peak (4 hours, 6km)

Access to the walk is via the narrow, winding road along the eastern shore of Lake Ohau, 23km from Twizel.  Care is needed.  The walking track follows an old 4WD track for most of its length.  From Lake Ohau the track climbs steeply through zig zags up to the ridge at 1500m.  Exceptional views across four lakes surrounded by mountains reward walkers who reach the ridge.  Return via the same route.
